Monday Morning with Merton: Ready For Anything

One of the reasons why I love Fr. Louis is because he makes me laugh out loud:

“Recently in the breviary we had a saint who, at the point of death, removed his pontifical vestments and got out of bed.  He died on the floor, which is only right; but one hardly has time to be edified by it – one is still musing over the fact that he had pontifical vestments on in bed. “

  1. I know it’s no laughing matter, but I couldn’t help noticing the black comedy of the situation, while I can appreciate how one can by edified by it. – YIC/Gene

  2. It works even on Tuesday! For those of us who are having a hard time getting around. Cannot imagine sleeping in vestments…Must have been the dead of winter and it was way too cold…Very funny!! Thank you!

  3. Terry, I would have loved to have heard him laugh in real life. Those around him said that it was absolutely contagious.

Cathy, you’re probably right! Your comment put me in mind of Br. Freddie’s posts when he was away on 3-month retreat, always freezing and wearing as much clothing to bed as he could find!
